Why do you spell 'womxn' with an x?
At the Sanaya Set, we have adopted 'womxn' to show solidarity with the trans community, as this is one of many ways we seek to promote intersectionality. To learn more about this spelling of womxn, click here. We believe we should all be focusing on the different ways we can elevate intersectionality in our daily lives, and we believe in doing what we can (and always strive to do more, learn more) to show our solidarity with the trans and non-binary communities. This means learning to ask about preferred gender pronouns and teaching our kids about how to respect all people; how to make people feel comfortable just being themselves. While we acknowledge the Sanaya Set is a femme centric collection of socially conscious products, we want to ensure our values are clear.
What was the inspiration to create the Sanaya Set?
We came together with the realization that it was time to pursue our passions- to use our privilege to make a positive impact and live intentionally to empower womxn globally. As first-generation South Asian womxn, our life experiences have shown us that feminism goes beyond gender. We believe in intersectional feminism, which is aimed at understanding overlapping identities and how these factors impact the way we experience oppression and discrimination. These factors include race, class, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, and other backgrounds. This is how the Sanaya Set was born- there is no time better than the present to use our voices to say and do the right thing. For ourselves, for our peers, and most importantly, for future generations.
What is social justice x self-care?
Our mission is deeply rooted in being champions for social justice. Social justice is broadly defined as justice in terms of the distribution of wealth, opportunities, and privileges within society- racial equality, gender equality, equal access to healthcare, and economic justice are a few examples. The social justice movement is growing with each day, and it is our goal to continually growth with it. We recognize our privilege and strive to put it into action- to positively impact social justice.
We believe that self-care is critical to maintaining strength for this movement. This means being as kind to yourself as you are to others. Self-care to us means nourishing your mind, body and soul. We understand self-care goes beyond the Sanaya Set. However, we do take a lot of care in curating the items we include in our collections. If our mission and products resonate with you, the Sanaya Set is a meaningful way to treat yourself and/or loved ones, while also positively impacting social justice.
What is intersectional feminism?
Intersectional Feminism goes beyond gender. It is aimed at understanding womxn's overlapping identities and how these factors impact the way we experience oppression and discrimination. These factors include race, class, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, and other backgrounds.
Intersectional Feminism to us means showing each other greater understanding- recognizing our diversity makes us stronger, makes us beautiful. Most importantly, it means pulling each other up. This is why we focus on sourcing our collections predominantly from womxn owned businesses, with an emphasis on businesses owned by womxn of color and/or those from marginalized communities. We also work with organizations and fair trade companies who elevate womxn globally. We collaborate with like minded businesses who are committed to positively impacting social justice.
How does the Sanaya Set give back?
The Sanaya Set gives back in multiple ways. In curating our products, we focus on sourcing predominantly from womxn owned businesses, with an emphasis on businesses owned by womxn of color and/or those from marginalized communities. We also work with organizations and fair trade companies who elevate womxn globally. We collaborate with like minded businesses who are committed to positively impacting social justice and whose values are aligned with ours.
We choose a charitable organization that is aligned with our mission to highlight with each collection – 10% of our net proceeds are donated to this organization. Organizations we have donated to included Planned Parenthood, ACLU, and OneAmerica. Additionally, we donating 10% of the net proceeds from our Marketplace items to Women For Women International.
Can you explain your pricing and what makes Sanaya Set different?
Our seasonal collections are priced from $35 per month, which is in alignment with the price point of most subscription services (keeping in mind we curate quarterly collections). We have also recently launched our Intersectional Marketplace, which offers individual socially conscious products at a lower price point. 10% of net proceeds from the Marketplace are donated to Women for Women International.
At the Sanaya Set, our key differentiating factors are:
We directly donate 10% of our net proceeds to charitable organizations that align with our core values. We price our products to ensure we are able to give back to fight for our future.
Our sourcing is unique and intersectional in focus - we are sourcing primarily from womxn owned businesses, with an emphasis on small businesses owned by womxn of color and/or those from marginalized communities. We also work with fair trade companies and other organizations that are either also giving back/donating or providing job training and fair wages to womxn globally. This means that while our products are impactful and have a meaningful story to tell, we cannot discount them as highly as other retail companies. Think ‘organic food’ vs. ‘non-organic food.’
We are a small womxn of color owned business, trying to do business while elevating social justice and empowering womxn. Our operating costs are high, and we have been funding our passion project personally to date. We do not have the purchasing power of larger organizations, and we are working tirelessly to grow our business organically, with high hopes to grow our movement to reach people who care as much as we do.
I see that Sanaya Set gives back to charitable organizations, but you are not a non-profit company?
Our mission is rooted in social justice, self-care, and intersectional feminism. We are committed to elevating womxn globally, with an emphasis on womxn of color and/or those from marginalized communities. We are also committed to proving that you can source responsibly, give back to organizations that positively impact social justice, and still be a thriving business. We want to show the world that doing the right thing, doing good- can also make good business sense. At the Sanaya Set, we are doing business with a conscience.
Do you ship internationally?
At this time, we do not ship internationally. We hope to be able to do so in the near future!
